Belfast Central Library

Belfast Central Library

Belfast Central Library, one of the city’s best-known public buildings, has served the people of Northern Ireland since 1888. The grade B listed building now houses services including access to Wi-Fi, lending collections and unique heritage resources including the most comprehensive collection of newspapers in Northern Ireland. There is a coffee shop and exclusive stationery and print range items, inspired by the Libraries Northern Ireland collection of Marcus Ward material, are available for sale. Admission is free and the library is open six days a week.

Description

Libraries NI was established in April 2009 as a result of the Review of Public Administration. Libraries NI has the statutory responsibility for the provision of public library services in Northern Ireland. Its functions are laid down in the Libraries Act (Northern Ireland) 2008. It is a Non Departmental Public Body which reports to the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure.

Belfast Central Library is part of Libraries NI's network of public branch and mobile libraries across Northern Ireland. The benefits of the library network are many with essential services and support provided in many rural and urban centres across Northern Ireland.

From books to local history resources, Libraries NI has a host of fabulous services and exciting events that will lead you on a journey of discovery. You can join the library at any age and membership is free. You can use your library card at any public library in Northern Ireland. This means you can borrow items from one library and return them to another.

Libraries also provide free access to computers and Wi-Fi for members or visitor and tourist access for a small charge. The computers are supported by professional staff with print and copying facilities available.
