Ward Park

Ward Park

Ward Park covers an area of 37 acres and among its attractions are a children's playground, all weather hockey pitches, cricket pitch, bowling greens, putting green and tennis courts.

Description

It also has a chain of small lakes providing wildfowl sanctuary with many interesting specimens and dry pens containing a large variety of exotic birds.

Free Live Music events take place annually at the Ward Park Band stand every Sunday 3-5pm in July and August.

Sporting facilities are open from Easter - September, 7 days a week. Charges apply.

Great Wars Trail

A public air raid shelter still stands in Ward Park, a reminder of one of the raids on the town. Nearby Bangor Golf Club has a print of James Beadle’s historic painting of the attack at the Battle of the Somme by the 36th (Ulster) Division on 1 July 1916; it was damaged by shrapnel from a German bomb dropped on the night of 15 April 1941 (the night of a major bombing raid on Belfast). A Second World War pill box can also be found on the course.
