Shaun McDowell: Islands of Ours Exhibition

Description

'Islands of Ours' brings together an ambitious body of new work by British painter Shaun McDowell. Shaun has always aspired to make an exhibition in Belfast, where he is excited by what he calls 'a landscape of movement and enterprise, of colourful past and bright future - a city simmering with potential'. This exhibition comprises paintings which in both form and feeling reflect on landscape and memory.

They are informed by personal experience and history, intuition and pure gesture, as well as connected with the news and views of the present day. The paintings in the exhibition have all been made over the past few years. Shaun McDowell works on his boards all at the same time on the floor of his studio. He moves between the boards, layering wet on dry marks which give rise to complete works which are alive and vibrant in colour and expression.

Shaun McDowell has exhibited his work internationally. Notable exhibitions include Visible, Invisible: Against the Security of the Real with Cecily Brown, Katy Moran, Hans Josephsohn, Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art, London, The Tangled Grove, Brickhouse at Nutbrook Studios, Peckham, London and solo presentations at the Hannah Barry Gallery Navigator and much more. Shaun McDowell’s father’s family are from Antrim in Northern Ireland. He lives and works in Redhill, Surrey, where he also runs the occasional exhibition space Dynamite Projects.

Please note, The Andrews Gallery may at time be used for private functions so please call ahead to check exhibition availability on +44 (0)28 9076 6386.
