The Lebensborn Programme (Fount of Life) held the objective of raising the birth rate of Aryan children, contributing to the increase of races classified as “racially pure”. Initiated by the SS, the programme reinforced the ideologies of health and hygiene that resonated through the Nazi state of the early 20th century. It expanded into several occupied European countries during WWII where many children were kidnapped and assessed for desirable criteria and deemed suitable to be adopted and raised in Lebensborn homes or fostered by approved German families.

Andrew Butler lived and worked in Northern Ireland from 1994 to 2004. He now lives and works in Bournemouth, England.
