Friar’s Fairies and Famine – Friar’s Bush Tour
Description
Led by popular guide Dr Deirdre Nic an tSionnaigh, this tour through the ancient and Victorian sections of the graveyard will transport you to the earliest origins of Belfast through Celtic mysticism, Early Irish Christian, Medieval and Victorian Times when the graveyard had to close after the Great Irish Famine.
This tour is a wonderful introduction to the shared early history and heritage of south Belfast, perhaps revelatory for those who have relied solely on the books of Anglo historians who claimed the history of Belfast began in more recent modern times…There will be an occasional Irish tune for atmosphere and during Celtic feast holidays added Gaelic cultural dimensions.
All profit from Cairde na Cille (Friends of the Churchyard) tours currently go towards the restoration of this graveyard. Cairde na Cille are the official non-profit Community Interest Company who have been painstakingly restoring this graveyard from spring 2023 as well as carrying out all maintenance of the graveyard pathways and grounds enabling tours to take place. At the time of writing Cairde na Cille receive no public funding towards their restoration work or their tours.
