Description

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) is delighted to welcome a conference organised by Dr Conor Curran, the British Society of Sports History and the Irish Research Council.

The conference will provide a discussion forum for an historical and contemporary analysis of sport, education and society in an international context. It will examine sport’s historical and contemporary role and place within education with a view towards the development of a research network and the publication of a special edited collection on the subject.

Themes will include:

  • The history of sport and education
  • Sporting bodies and educational institutions
  • Tradition and prestige in sport and education
  • Nationalism, sport and education
  • Religion and sport in education
  • Politics
  • Class issues within sport and education
  • Educational policy and sport
  • Competitive and non-competitive sport within education
  • Centres of sporting achievement
  • Gender bias
  • Race
  • Conflict within sport and education.
