Come along and enjoy Beethoven’s masterpiece alongside works by Strauss and Berg.
That infamous antihero Don Juan makes many a musical appearance. Richard Strauss’s version of the tale focuses on someone looking for, but never finding, his idealised vision of love and the work proceeds via a series of climaxes and disappointments ending in the protagonist’s death in a duel.
Ulster Orchestra Leader Tamás Kocsis features as soloist in Berg’s most popular work, his Violin Concerto. Following the death of Alma Mahler’s daughter Manon, the concerto was dedicated to her – ‘to the Memory of an Angel’ – and its highly-wrought tragedy ultimately is not only a sublime memorial to Manon, but also Berg himself, who died before the piece was premièred.
And what to say of another piece with a famous dedication to Napoleon? Beethoven’s Eroica is, quite simply, one of the masterworks of classical music. At the time of its première, it was the largest, most radical and most complex symphony ever written. Today, it is just a favourite of many listeners, who revel in its huge expressive range and massive symphonic energy.
