Jennifer Dempsey’s coming of age story about losing your way then finding it in the most unlikely of places.

Something Great! Finding Myself in the Belfast Circus (part 2) is a 75 minute dramedy written and performed by former Belfast Circus director Jennifer Dempsey. A coming of age story about a young woman who loses her way but finds herself in the Belfast Circus. Something Great! sold out at United Solo Festival in NYC, the Salida Theater Festival in Colorado and at the 2022 Imagine! Belfast Festival where it was called “outstanding,” “riveting” and “a completely unique take on life during the Troubles”.

In 1989, a 21 year old Irish-American woman moves to Belfast to be an exchange student at Queen’s University. Fate intervenes when she notices a Belfast Circus flyer on the student union bulletin board. Something Great! is a raw portrait of a young woman who embarks on an unexpected journey of self-discovery through the circus. A story of finding purpose and passion in the most unlikely of places, and proving you should never let school get in the way of your education.

Jennifer Dempsey spent twelve years with the Belfast Circus (1989-2001). An Irish American originally from Fairfax, Virginia, Jennifer is a writer, actress and circus director now based in Salida, Colorado.

“Beautiful play by Jennifer Dempsey on her life in Belfast in the 80s and 90s. From an unimpressed student to the director of the Belfast Circus – she tells a very personal story with wit, vigour and passion – I even shed a wee tear.”

“An Irish history lesson delivered through the lens of a young American on a special journey. Brilliant performance. I’m still thinking about it.”

“Jennifer Dempsey’s vulnerability, courage, authenticity, and humor on their own make for must-see entertainment. Woven together they create a truly heartfelt, touching, and comedic account of both the challenges she faced and her ability to persevere and thrive. Set amongst the troubles in Northern Ireland in the late 1980’s adds to her tour de force.”
