Tribute to Marilyn Hyndman | Docs Ireland

Marilyn Hyndman inspired generations of artists, musicians, film-makers and activists across a broad spectrum of equality issues.

Through her work with Dave Hyndman, Northern Visions and NVTV, she supported hundreds of individuals and communities across Ireland and the UK, with training, hands-on practical guidance and support.

In 2004, Marilyn and Dave Hyndman set up the community television station, NVTV. Their vision was one of a “democratised form of media, where new technologies are utilised as a tool for expression and creativity, to effect social change and combat poverty, social exclusion and isolation.” Enabling thousands of stories to be told, stories which otherwise would never have been heard. Documentary production has been central to the work of the station since it’s inception.

In 1996, Marilyn published a book, Further Afield: Journeys from a Protestant Past, it is a collection of 40 accounts of what life is like for working class Protestants who do not fit the traditional mould. The book made a significant contribution to political debate in Northern Ireland.

Tragically, after a short illness, Marilyn Hyndman died in January of this year. As a tribute to her memory and to the important contribution she made to documentary in this country, Docs Ireland will screen the first documentary Marilyn made, which was broadcast by Channel 4, Under the Health Surface: As Told by Belfast Women (Channel 4 1986) and the last programme she directed Nature’s Haven (NVTV 2022). The screenings will be introduced by Marilyn’s friend, and former Director of Development at Belfast City Council, Marie-Therese McGivern.

Docs Ireland Outstanding Contribution to Irish Documentary 2022 will be awarded to Dave Hyndman and posthumously, Marilyn Hyndman.
