St Matthew’s Church
Description
St Matthew's is the oldest church on the Shankill!
In 1922 the pulpit, prayer desk and sanctuary panelling were erected as a war memorial to those who fell in the Great War. Memorial stained-glass windows have replaced the original plain glass and recently a window depicting St. Patrick was installed. This modern window symbolises the connection with the first church on the Shankill, whose foundation is traditionally linked to St Patrick.
The parish of St Matthew’s covers the upper Shankill / Woodvale area of Belfast, between the Springfield and Crumlin roads, from Tennent Street – Lawnbrook Avenue up to the Forth river bridge on the Ballygomartin Road.
It is thought that not only is St Matthew’s the oldest church on the Shankill, but also the oldest Christian site in all of Belfast dating back to the first settlement in the area somewhere around 455AD.
