A Belfast Landmark
For generations, Cave Hill has been synonymous with Belfast, with its imposing outline visible throughout the city. Its most famous feature, known locally as Napoleon's Nose, is believed to have been the inspiration for Jonathan Swift's novel, Gulliver's Travels.
Where to Start Your Walk
A lot of people have heard of Cave Hill but don't know how to hike it or where to start. Paulo shows us a 5km loop starting at Belfast Castle. This route takes up to about 90 minutes, offering some of the most rewarding views in the city. Just look out for and follow the green arrows!
Pre-Hike Fuel
Before their adventure, Paulo and Olly make a pit stop at General Merchants for some fuel. This welcoming, dog-friendly spot is just a stone's throw away from Cave Hill and is a perfect place to grab coffee or brunch before you set off.
Spot The Caves
As you climb, be sure to check out the caves that give it its name - did you know Cave Hill is named after five caves? At the summit you'll find McArt's Fort, an ancient Bronze Age fort believed to be over 3,500 years old.
Take in the Views
On a clear day, the views stretch far beyond the city. The Mourne Mountains appear on the horizon, and across the water you might even catch a glimpse of the Isle of Man or Scotland.
Easier Ways to Explore
For those who prefer a gentler walk, the Belfast Castle Estate offers several shorter routes, including the Castle Gardens Trail, where you can enjoy the scenery without tackling the full climb.
Cave Hill is proof that Belfast's best experiences don't require a car. Get out and explore!
