We Used to Cycle – A Journey Through Belfast’s Travel Revolution
Description
RE[live] Belfast’s journey through time as we explore the city’s active travel revolution.
Belfast has long been a hub of innovation and change. Did you know that the “Pneumatic Tire” was invented in Belfast by a veterinarian father who was only trying to help his son, Johnny? John Boyd Dunlop patented this innovation in 1888, rewrote history across the globe and paved the way to a booming cycling industry with the Dunlop Tires.
Active travel, such as cycling and walking, is more important than ever in addressing today’s challenges – reducing carbon emissions, improving public health, and creating vibrant and liveable communities. As our city prepares to create cycling infrastructure for our future, let us reminisce and take you back through stories, archives, and images from those who lived through and witnessed Belfast’s cycling evolution.
In partnership with Cycling UK and Belfast Cycling Campaign, come along to learn, participate, and be inspired to make active travel a part of your daily routine. Join us as we reflect on the past and pedal forward together into a more sustainable world.
We used to cycle will showcase how transport in Belfast has shifted over time and sharing visions from the past, present and future to show that driving wasn’t and isn’t the only way to get around the city.
With archive footage of Belfast’s transport past, a story of how one family have created the conditions for them to travel sustainably, and ideas about how we move forward and make travel in and around Belfast more pleasant for everyone.
