Stoney Beginnings – Prehistoric Axe Heads and the Geology and Archaeology of Co. Antrim by Ian Enlander
Description
This event will explore the link between the unique geological and archaeological history of stone axe production in Co. Antrim.
Focusing on porcellanite, the event will explore the formations at Tievebulliagh and Brockley, which, through pyrometamorphism, produced a fine-grained porcellanite rock, and became the focus of stone axe production in the Neolithic period.
The resultant porcellanite axes were often highly polished, and may have had both a utilitarian and ritual function. Other materials including flint, which was widely used in tool production in prehistory, will also be discussed. Participants will also be able to view a range of Irish stone axes from the HED collections.
Suitable for ages 14+.
