The Life and Times of Thomas McCabe: A Belfast Radical
Description
Head to Clifton House, the home of Belfast’s oldest charity, where Gerry McNamee will discuss the life and times of Thomas McCabe who is best known as an abolitionist, a radical and a philanthropist.
‘May God wither the hand and consign the name to eternal infamy of the man who will sign that document!’. These are the words exclaimed by Thomas McCabe in 1786 in response to Waddell Cunningham’s proposal to set up a slave ship company here in Belfast. His outburst influenced those gathered in the Assembly Rooms as Cunningham’s venture to establish a slaving company here in Belfast failed.
This year, as part of their 250th Anniversary celebrations, Belfast Charitable Society hope to use their talks and events to help raise funds for their ongoing philanthropic work, therefore they will be offering these free, with a 'pay what you can' donation. All funds raised will be used to support those most in need. They thank you in advance for your support.
Gerry McNamee is a retired secondary school teacher. After short spells in Enniskillen and London, Gerry taught for most of his career in St. Malachy's College where he was a Year Head and taught Classics and History until retirement in 2014. He was also College Archivist and is interested in the history and heritage of the College.
