Cabaret for Change: Addressing the Political through the Poetical
Description
A provocative yet convivial gathering to address ‘the political’ by participating in ‘the poetical’.
Join comedians Stephen Beggs and Rachael McCabe as they host this fun, creative and uplifting event. In our world so often poisoned by exploitation (to quote Billy Bragg) we need creative voices to uplift us and restore hope and vision of a better world where values of peace, justice and kindness can prevail. Through the music of Seosamh Mac (Lonesome George) and Change the World in Song, and readings from local poets Maggie McCarney, Anne McMaster and Niamh Twomey, this event will bring people together to seek inspiration in a shared spirit of community and compassion for our troubled world.
This civic gathering is intended to be both enjoyably convivial and seriously provocative. We who choose to gather in what will be an informal, relaxed setting will have opportunity to listen to and participate in the singing of songs and the reading or reciting of poetry and poetical prose – all related to the promotion of values of peace, justice and kindness in the powerful and troubling times in which we are living.
The event is about addressing ‘the political’ by participating in ‘the poetical’ – that aspect of our experience of being human which stirs hearts and minds, gives voice to joy and grief, reveals truth and fosters hope. Mindful of some words spoken by Seamus Heaney decades ago, engaging with the poetical, in all its manifestations, helps us to appreciate and wonder at the marvellous in the midst of the murderous. And it may also inspire and spur us to wise and compassionate action for the common good of our fellow human beings and all of the living things on our planet.
There will be some space for audience participation, and possibly impromptu offerings from the floor.
The venue is BYO, so feel free to bring any drinks to share with your table.
