Description

In this exhibition “Borrowed Time” Mariana Duarte Santos shares a series of drawings, paintings and linocuts inspired by still frames of old movies/TV shows that she’s gathered over time.

With these works she seeks to renew or reanimate these poignant images by isolating them from their original context and presenting them in a new way.

Mariana tends to pick a lot of little known movies/TV shows, where actors are not immediately identifiable, as she wants the focus to be on the beauty of the images themselves rather than a portrait of a “celebrity”.

The resulting artworks often convey an open ended narrative or a moment of tension where something is about to happen.

Images in film move so quickly that they are often unnoticed, by taking these “discarded” images into a new medium, time, and context, the artist hopes to bring to them a new life and new stories.
