Description

Become a May Queen or May King and create your own flower crown with Sow Grateful Flower Farm on Monday 6th May at the Ulster Folk Museum!

Bealtaine, also known as May Day, traditionally marked the beginning of summer and the start of the lighter part of the year. May flowers would have been hung across thresholds of homes and even stuffed in keyholes to protect from faerie folk. In many rural communities a May Queen would have been chosen and a crown of flowers made for her to wear throughout the day’s celebrations.

Join Sow Grateful, a local artisan flower farm, in this special workshop using fresh, locally grown flowers and foliage. You'll have an introduction on Bealtaine traditions and folklore by a knowledgeable museum guide before your workshop with Amy and Aisling begins. Learn about the sustainable and innovative techniques used by Sow Grateful and their focus on soil health and plant diversity while applying peat-free, no-dig and nature friendly methods when creating your flower crowns.

After the workshop, wear your crown as your explore the Folk Museum and enjoy the May Day celebrations. Or bring your crown home as a lasting decoration that can be hung in your home to honour the start of the summer season.

Your ticket includes:

A seasonal drink made from foraged ingredients from Feasting on Weeds

A workshop with Amy and Aisling from Sow Grateful using fresh locally grown flowers and foliage.

All materials and tools included, as well as great tips about growing your own cut flowers and using more sustainable methods in floristry.

Admission to the May Day celebrations in the Ulster Folk Museum on Monday 6th May.

Please meet in the Photographers Studio - we'll be in touch before the event with details.
